I’ve noticed in a lot of shows and movies the characters will say, for the most part, unused formalities like “mother” instead of “mom” or “it is” instead of “it’s” even though it’s pretty common to say the latter of each example. My guess would be that the writers are trying to keep the language as universal as possible. Common speech differs with region.

The reason why they all do this, is because shows, movies, and entertainment stuff isn’t just shown in the U.S. Its shown in many various places that speak fluent English, and not English that people speak everyday such as “Whaddup?” or “Mann Yu Be Trippin’ ” Script writers also want to make it accurate. But there ARE movies these days that don’t use ‘Mother’ instead of ‘Mom’
