He was in a litter that the mother left and was bottle fed from about three days old. I have had him since he was about 7 weeks. The “mother” said all of the kittens do this but yuck! get a little spray bottle and spray him.. My cat used to claw the furniture until my mom started spraying him with water..

He’ll learn that if he does that something bad will happen and learn to stop.

Please don’t spray your kitten with water when he’s tired… this will only increase his anxiety.

First, your kitty is self-soothing himself to sleep, much like a baby sucking their thumb. He’s found that his genitals somewhat resemble his mom’s teat and so he’s using them as a substitute. It may take some effort and imagination, but you can find something like the corner of a blanket or the ear of a stuffed toy or a vinyl nipple from a kitten feeding bottle or even the tip of your pinkie to offer him instead when he’s doing this. If nothing else works, just sit with him when you see he’s doing this and use one hand to gently block his ability to do the unwanted suckling and the other hand to stroke him lightly on the face and head, which will simulate his mother licking him, until he relaxes and goes to sleep. Left unchecked, he could conceivably do himself an injury, so it is important that you intervene in a humane and caring way.
