in english, “mother******” is a common word of derogation. even in my language (telugu). even among these profanities, the swear word refer to either mother-son incest (mostly) or to brother-sister incest. i am curious about these two things. one; why are swear words incest related? and two; why are they mostly related to mother and sister and not to father and brother.

Most profanities were first coined by males – so they spared their own sex [father, brother, etc.] from being included in their profanities !

…Persons involved in such incestuous relationships are the vilest of sex-criminals – in any and every human being’s eyes, irrespective of their nationalities, races, or lingual backgrounds. So, they are any slanderers’ first choice while abusing one another – because they’ll hurt most !

A culture’s curse words are defined by what that culture holds most sacred and private. In our culture, for instance, our sacred and private things are what we do in

1) The bedroom

2) the bathroom

3) Church

These three topics cover almost every curse word we’ve got. Since the incest taboo is pretty widespread, and sex happens in about every culture, it’s not surprising that some incest related terms are curse words. As for why it’s mother-son, hard to say. Could be that mothers tend to hold a more special place for a society’s males, and so they are more more eligible to be cursed (why curse something no one cares about?). Or maybe Freud has the answer…

I hope I am not as judgmental as kittykid, but I will say that incest is the last taboo and therefore the only thing that is shocking. If you call someone a homosexual or a an infidel, or a communist, in almost has no impact. But, incest is considered bad almost universally.
