- The Mother of All is Mother Earth (the female embodiment of nature).

- Although the poem obviously shows that war is horrific and destructive, the main theme is that death is not in itself an end. Instead, death becomes the fabric of the earth – and through nature, the soldiers continue to live.

- The poem only actually describes the battle scene in two lines (“Desperate on the torn bodies, on the forms covering the battlefields gazing, / (As the last gun ceased, but the scent of the powder-smoke

linger’d,)”) – although you could say that the later references to blood tells us something of the battle. The poem is, instead, Mother Earth crying out to the landscape to absorb the dead soldiers and their blood – and commanding nature to grant them eternal life.
