Predicament made by MicheleRN: Is it insulting to switch engagement bands?

I love my engagement ring, however I can’t seem to find a wedding band to match it. I was thinking about getting a matching set and put my original diamond in the new set. I then would use my original band and make a “mothers” ring out of it when we have kids. I ran this by my fiance and he seemed okay with it, as long as his money didn’t go to waste.

Is it bad for me to do this? I just can’t seem to find anything to match it. I’ve been to about 8 different jewelers.

You can have a costumed made ring to match it. Try going to a jeweler and ask about it.

No it’s not insulting. It might be less costly to have your diamond remounted into another set, since you can’t find a band to match your engagement ring. I have started looking into buying a good quality for my new wedding ring that I am pretty I will have made (were having a renewal of vows for our 10th wedding anniversary).

Honestly it’s insulting to me and my fiance thinks so also. I would never get a new ring b/c I wasn’t able to find a band. I’ve never understood why women trade “up” their rings or trade their rings in at all…but that’s just me. Why don’t you just have one made? It’s a lot cheaper if you go to a reputable local jeweler…NOT a chain store. They can most likely make one for a good price to match your set. I wouldn’t buy a whole new one just because you can’t find a band.

Well you can have something custom made, but no if you can’t find the right setting then change it, but keep the one you have just buy another one. this happen to me. i still kept the first ring we just looked for a 2piece set the second time

Many bands when bought separately just don’t fit perfectly together. My husband bought me a gorgeous marquise diamond surrounded with 6 little round diamonds and baguettes down each side of the ring. The following year he bought us matching anniversary bands. They don’t fit perfectly together, but well enough to look good together.

I do think it’s tacky to change the ring your fiancee obviously picked out for you himself.
