At times, I’d go to family gatherings. They’d either say, “You look so much like your father” or “You look so much like your mother”. I’d think, “I’m their son. What the bleep am I supposed to look like?”

What do you normally say to such statements?

“That’s how you know the milkman wasn’t involved” – or I would say that if I didn’t look more like my uncle than my dad…

Just say thank you…and move on.

Mother Harbor seal on the Monterey Bay coast

Picture via Mother Harbor seal on the Monterey Bay coast

This mother seal (Phoca vitulina) has just hauled herself out of the water following a brief swim and is looking for her pup, which she had left by the shore in some rocks. Unknown to her, the pup had slowly followed her in to the sea, and was now alone there. A few minutes later, the pup surfaced near the shore and was bleating pitifully, upon which this mother seal went back out in the waves to bring her pup safely back to shore.
