Query merely by JB: Can I use my grandmother as a parent on my FAFSA?

I have to send out my FAFSA pretty soon to some colleges, but I’m sorta stuck. I’m up to the part where I have to provide parental information, but I don’t live with my parents. I live with my grandmother. She already claimed me in her taxes and stuff, but I only see space to insert my mom’s or dad’s information. Do I put my grandmother’s information where it says “Mother”?

First of all, you need to realize why they are asking you for this information. They want to determine how much your family is expected to contribute to your education. This information is used to decide how much aid they need to find for you. The more your parents’ income, the less aid they will offer you. That said if you only list one parent b/c you can’t get the information from the other, that is fine. A lot of people have one parent who has deserted them or who was never around in the first place, or a parent they don’t get a long with or talk to. So if you can provide the necessary information just for one of your parents, that is good. If you can’t and you are your grandmother’s dependent, you can just use her. She probably was for all important purposes your legal guardian. And I am also guessing her ability to pay for your education is minimal, so the student aid folks will be looking for grants and other money to finance your education anyway. Generally, you could use a parent or her–but it would be to your benefit to list the person whose income is less.

Ignore Gaffney’s answer. You cannot pick-and-choose who your parent is on the FAFSA form. Unless your grandmother has legally adopted you, she is not your parent. Unless you can answer “yes” to at least one of these questions -

-Were you born before January 1, 1987?

-As of today, are you married?

-At the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year, will you be working on a master’s or doctorate program (such as an MA, MBA, MD, JD, Ph.D., EdD, graduate certificate, etc.)?

-Are you currently serving on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces for purposes other than training?

-Are you a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces?

-Do you have children who receive more than half of their support from you between July 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011?

-Do you have dependents (other than your children or spouse) who live with you and who receive more than half of their support from you, now and through June 30, 2011?

-At any time since you turned age 13, were both your parents deceased, were you in foster care, or were you a dependent or ward of the court?

-Are you or were you an emancipated minor as determined by a court in your state of legal residence?

-Are you or were you in legal guardianship as determined by a court in your state of legal residence?

-At any time on or after July 1, 2009, did your high school or school district homeless liaison determine that you were an unaccompanied youth who was homeless?

- At any time on or after July 1, 2009, did the director of an emergency shelter or transitional housing program funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development determine that you were an unaccompanied youth who was homeless?

- At any time on or after July 1, 2009, did the director of a runaway or homeless youth basic center or transitional living program determine that you were an unaccompanied youth who was homeless or was self-supporting and at risk of being homeless?

– you will have to provide income and tax information for your parents (along with your own). You will probably also have to account for the financial support you received from your grandmother. Read the instructions at the link below carefully – your situation is a little out of the mainstream.
