Topic by : I don’t understand the concept of “retroactive child support.” What debts could a child amass?
If a child is has survived for “x” years without child support from one particular parent, why should the child need to receive payments retroactively? It’s not as if the child could incur any debts that would need to be paid off.
This sounds more like “best interests of the mother” than “best interests of the child.”
What say you?

the custodial parent (not always the mother) has put forth the money the whole time, you need to pay them back for your fair share

I had $ 4,000 of credit card debt racked up by the time I was in 2nd grade due to having to outfit my bike with the latest rims and flashy accessories. It happens sometimes.

The child does not incur debt, the parent that is responsible for raising the child had incurred debt on behalf of the child, and the child’s best interest…
I think a better question would be: Why wouldn’t a parent WANT to take care of their child?

…and they wonder why they say family courts are biased toward women… Most women don’t get enough child support to even half way raise their child. No human being could live on what most women get for child support.

Financially irresponsible women spending way too much damn money on themselves rather than the child that the man didn’t want in the first place. You chose to have it, you pay for it girls.

Ok in the case were the father was aware of the child and he just didn’t pay? You can bet your ass he should pay retroactive child support. Now if he was unaware of the child’s existence the mother should suck it up.

The money to support the child must have come from somewhere. It either made the mother’s life very much more difficult than need be, or she had to borrow from grandparents, etc etc.
Or in my case, my children often went without the toys and clothing, the hobbies, etc that their friend’s have. My ex husband owes me many thousands – money stolen from me, my new husband, our children and from my sons.

When you say “retroactive” child support, I’m assuming you’re not talking about child support that’s past due but rather a scenario where the mother has never asked for child support before and then just suddenly asks for it when the child is like 10 years old and wants 10 years of it on top of ongoing support.
I don’t like that because their arguments for it make no sense. First they say that the mom has provided all the support for the child and should be paid back for it, but then on the other hand they’ll say that the kid went without. One minute mom was shelling out for all of the child’s needs and the next minute the child went without. They want the credit for providing full support for the child and the sympathy for having a child who went without.
Learn far better?
