I was watching Pride and Prejudice and several times someone was addressed mum when they weren’t really there mom. I just didn’t know if mum had some other meaning then “mother”.

I think it’s supposed to be ‘ma’am’ but it just sounds like ‘mum’ to us.

I could be wrong but I believe “mum” was a type of polite endearment as one here would call a gentleman sir, or lady, ma’am.

They are not saying ‘mum’ they are saying ‘ma’am’, which is short for ‘madam’ – a term of respect.

The Brits only use ‘mum’ for their mum although some will also call their mother in law ‘mum’ too.
