You people have been adopted, what do you call it?

Request courtesy of Meister: What do you call someone who has adopted you?

I am confused on what you call a person who has adopted you. Do you call them your step-mom and step-dad? Is there some other formal way to say it?

I really don’t want to settle with calling them an “adopted mother” which my friend claims to be correct.

This is for a Gothic story I am writing, nothing tied into my personal life. Straight simple question, please answer.

Thank you,

Don

If I was adopted when I was a baby, I’d just use “Mom” or “Dad”. But if I was adopted when I was older, I’d just use the person’s first name, unless asked to do otherwise.

just call them mom or dad what ever they prefer..

or as your friend says call them your adopted parents

Answer by Sarah

The people I’ve met in my life who were adopted merely called their parents Mom and Dad. When referring to their birth parents, they used “birth mother” or something similar. Legally, they are not steps or anything like that. They are legally mother and father to the child.

a gothic story??? it HAS to be “adopted mother” that’s hilarious.

Answer by wyomugs

You call them, MOM and DAD. What? Should we all begin to call our parents our “Female Legal Guardian” and “Male Legal Guardian”???

Have a polite day.

Answer by Monty

If you’re adopted, you call the people who adopted you mother and father. Parents. Or, you could simply have your hero or heroine call their new parents by their first names – or even last names.

They are adoptive parents. An adoptive mother and an adoptive father. A step-parent is only when a person marries someone with a child from a previous relationship.

I was adopted at 5yrs old and now I m 35, I call my mom and dad, MOM and DAD…

But when I am speaking to others that are not familular with my situation then I say,” my ADOPTIVE parents… So ya, adoptive mother or adoptive father is correct.. Hope this helps..
