I suppose the reason fr this is to address the other person by their primary purpose or function. This is the only guess I have for this practice.

Parents addressing each other as “father and mother”

or as “dad and mom” is something from a past world,

though it still occurs nowadays.

I think it has something to do with the distance kept between parents and children, that, generally, has strongly diminished in present times.

This does happen in many languages actually, I suppose it might be related to the Oedipus Complex. Read about it and you’ll see.

They address themselves father or mother after the birth of children. One reason is that the child gets as early as possible to know who is who and does not address the father or mother with their first names.

Well. . . i do not allow my wife to call me that. Neither do i call her mummy.

But I always call her girl or baby even when my children are around. So, very often, the children will ask, ‘daddy, which girl/ baby?’, and they will say, ‘mummy, dad’s calling u’.
