Mother Circa 1933

I don’t recall having seen this glamorous photo of my mother until I came across it today in one of my late sister’s photo albums.

The most difficult questions are the ones you never had a chance to ask. They’re tough because you have to answer them yourself.

I believe this is Mother’s senior portrait at Goucher College, where she was a member of the Class of 1933. She looks too mature for this to be a high school portrait, don’t you think?

And while Mother could and did hold her own in society, she wasn’t a debutante or socialite, so it’s unlikely the photo would have been taken later for public relations purposes.

After college, Mother returned to her home town in central Kansas, where she did social work (it was the worst of the depression and the dust-bowl years), and was instrumental in helping her widowed mother manage the family business, a daily newspaper. In time, Mother was the first woman, or at the least one of the very first, to acquire a radio station license in her own right. And the station is still on the air!

Anyway, I think she’s absolutely beautiful in this stunning period portrait, but of course, I’m slightly biased.
