I have a “mother” Bird of Paradise plant that is about 10 feet tall and is about 10 years old. She bloomed from March of 2008 through early February of 09. She has about six pups that range in size from 2 – 5 feet tall. I know their rooting system is rather intense therefore I do not want to disturb or shock the “mother bird”. Please let me know if you have any ideas of how to transplant these “baby birds”. Thanks for your time!

Bird of paradise at best are difficult to propagate or transplant. You need to try to dig up the whole clump. ” She” will be best dug up in spring time before it starts to produce new growth. Then just manually separate the pups from the mommy plant and replant all making sure not to plant any deeper than they previously were planted. Since they have a rhizomous root system you may need a knife to separate the pups.It takes about three months for them to reestablish a good root system so you may need to stake them up if you live in a windy environment. Do not fertilize them other than maybe some bone meal when you first transplant them. After they establish their root system then you can return them to a normal fertilization program. It will then take a couple of years for them to rebloom.
