Real question caused by Emmilee: Is the line “and that kids is how I met your mother” copyrighted?

I’m writing a play. And I really want the ending line to be “and that kids is how I met your mother.” But people are telling me that it’s copyrighted. But I don’t think you can copyright a line. Anyway I would really appreciate it if a nice person researched this for me.

well if you take it from another person work it is called plagiarism. Copyrighted means like if its from a movie. But either way it still get you in deep trouble.

No, it’s not copyright infringement for anyone in the entire universe to say that one sentence. The fact that a TV show has used it as a trademark or as part of their dialogue has no bearing on whether you can use it, primarily because IT WAS NOT THEIR ORIGINAL CREATION, and thus they don’t own the copyright.


The proper line is, “And that, kids, is how I met your mother.” Note the added commas.
