Inquiry by crablegs: Is it more beneficial to let a dog have one litter of pups before getting her spayed?
When I was a youngster, we had a blue heeler that was spayed. She never had a litter of pups, and my dad thought maybe we should have had her bred for one litter. But she had the best dispostion and was so happy. Is there any benefit in the dogs demeanor if they have had at least one litter? Or is it better to spay them and not turn them into a “mother”?

It is better to spay.
Would looking after a bunch of hungry, demanding, whining brats improve YOUR demeanor? Intact females get hormonal, so at certain times their demeanor can go right out the window.

Personally i think it is better to spay them just because there are so many dogs out there that need homes and letting a dog have puppies is adding to the problem.

A dog has no need health-wise or mentally, to have a litter, it won’t benefit her in any way.

It relly doesn’t make a difference. If they have pups they have someone to love and have. If your just going to give all the pups away and not even keep one there is no point at all.

No, there is no benefit. In fact, there are more risks. It is much safer just to spay her.
Good for you for trying to do research before making decisions.

It is better to spay them. Why stress their bodies out with carrying a litter of pups. Then there is the chance that something could go wrong. Not a huge chance, but it is there nonetheless. You won’t love her less because she doesn’t have puppies.

No, there is no benefit. It’s usually best to spay unless your dog has finished her championships and has good titles, proved normal in health testings and all that, I don’t really know it all but it’s not the best thing for an average dog owner to get involved in.
I’m glad your dog was spayed before she got a litter. The bit¢h or puppies may have died because you weren’t an experienced breeder.

it’s DEFINITELY better to spay them. better for health, better for pet overpopulation, better for your sanity (you’d be amazed how much poop 10 pups can spread around)
spay her, she’ll be much happier as your baby, without any of her own to worry about.

Sorry it’s not. If you wait till your female is old enough to be bred (2 yrs-3) she is already old enough to form tumors on her teets that can turn to cancer when she is older.
Plus you have to find homes for those 8-10 puppies 80% of them ending up on streets or in shelters… not a good idea.

there are no benefits to having a litter.. infact having a litter comes with many health risks.
Also each heat cycle a dog goes thru increases the chances of cancer.. considering that a dog should be at least 2 before being bred, that means she will go thru at least 3 heat cycles.
Having a litter can sometimes change a dog’s disposition.. often it may cause her to be more moody, aggressive, or territorial.
There are fare more benefits to spaying and not breeding. I cant think of any benefit behind breeding a dog.
Answer by GSP Mom
NO. Spaying her would be more beneficial to her health.
There are plenty of risks, but no particular benefits.
I know you didn’t say this, so I’m not talking about you, but I get irritated at some people who insist on breeding their dogs so their children can witness “the miracle of birth”.
